Prof. Yusuf Yıldırım, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Yusuf Yıldırım, MD was born in Artvin in 1974. After completing his primary and secondary education, he moved to İzmir in 1991 for the university education. He graduated from Ege University School of Medicine in 1997. Then specialized in General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Gynecologic Oncology and (General) Surgical Oncology, respectively. He became Associate Professor in 2007, Clinical Chief in 2008 and Professor in 2013. In May 2014, he went to Cleveland Clinic (Cleveland, OHIO, United States) as visitor and Robotic Surgery trainee. In June 2015, he got a fellowship from the "American College of Surgeons" (Fellow of the American College of Surgeons: FACS) representing the international standard and quality in the science and art of surgery. He has more than 150 scientific articles, most of which published in international Science Citation Index (SCI) journals, and his works have been cited more than 1900 times (h-index: 27, source: Scholar.Google.com, 10/10/2024). Professor Yıldırım is currently practicing in his private clinic and performs his surgeries in Acibadem Kent Hospital which is one of the leading comprehensive health center of Izmir and Turkiye.
In his
fields of expertise, he had participated in many national and international
scientific congresses and courses, and has served as meeting organizer, invited
speaker and chairman. He has written 3 books, one of which was published
internationally and authored or translated about 25 book chapters. Professor
Yıldırım is a referee for scientific articles in many prestigious international
medical journals such as Cancer®, European Journal of Surgical Oncology® and
International Journal of Gynecological Cancer®. Furthermore, he has taken part
in many Associate Professorship and Professorship juries and has mentored more
than 10 Master Theses. Meanwhile progressed to receive
Continuing Medical Education (CME) certificates from various institutions such
as the "European Accreditation Council", TUBITAK publication
incentive awards, congress presentation awards and certificates of appreciation
from various institutions. He is a member of the European Society of Surgical
Oncology (ESSO), the European Society of Gynecological Oncology (ESGO), the
Turkish Surgical Society, the Turkish Society of Gynecologic Oncology and the
Turkish Medical Association.
Professor Yıldırım is the only surgeon in Turkey with the "General Surgical Oncology" and "Gynecologic Oncology" specialties together, and in parallel with this, he pioneered several innovations and broke many firsts. He is one of Turkey's leading and high-volume cancer surgeons, and with over 23 years of professional experience in oncological surgery, he works with a focus on improving the quality of life of patients with gynecological, gastrointestinal and peritoneal cancers. He is also one of the first and widespread of HIPEC (Heated/Hypertermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy) practitioners in our country, which is a regional cancer treatment. In addition to cancer surgeries; many complicated "non-cancer" surgeries are frequently referred to him. While also dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of various "pre-cancerous" conditions and "benign" tumors and diseases.
Married with two children, Professor Yıldırım enjoys spending his free time with his family. He is keen on lifetime learning and researching subjects he does not know. He does his job with love and passion. “If I were to be born again, I would like to be a surgeon again” he says. His philosophy on patient care and the patient-physician relationship is as follows: “Always endeavor to do the right thing and do your best. Treat your patients the way you would like to be treated when you are sick. Be sympathetic, patient and honest”.
